The Thirsty 30
A vibrant connection with Jesus is essential to living a victorious Christian life. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches - and to bear fruit or have any life flowing through us, we've got to be connected to the vine!
For many of us, establishing a rhythm of daily connection with Jesus might seem like a challenge, but it's actually easier than you think.
We came across an awesome approach to devotion recently, simply called The Thirsty 30... Here's how it works:
Dedicate 30 minutes of your day to spending time with God, and divide that time into 10 minutes of worship, 10 minutes in the Word, and 10 minutes in prayer!
We're worshipping creatures by nature, and easily distracted at that! We centre our lives on our pleasure, comfort, relationships, careers, ambitions, and families, but there's only One who is worthy of our worship and that's Jesus.
No other treasure is as worth as much as He is, because no other treasure will lay down its life for us like He has. Worship is where we reorient our affections and attentions towards Him.
Speak out some praise from scripture, like the Psalms, a doxology, or declaration about who Jesus is! Get some worship music in your headphones and lift your hands and sing to Him! Give thanks for who He is and what He's done!
When our hearts have been re-centred rightly on Jesus, and when we've been nourished and taught through His Word, we're ready to pray, because prayer is about exchanging our wishes for His. That's literally what the word 'prayer' means!
Here's a simple key to effective prayer: instead of asking God to do what we want, let's ask Him instead what He wants, and pray for that!
Practical Tips for your Thirsty 30:
- Block out time each day for your Thirsty 30. We recommend the earlier the better, to set your day up for success! Plan ahead and clear time in your schedule to be with Jesus, every day.
- Set a countdown timer on your phone for 10 minutes, and hit 'repeat' each time it goes off. Think you can't worship or pray for 10 minutes straight? You'll be surprised at how you eat up the time! You might even need to graduate to a Thirsty 60 or more!
- Stick at it! It can take anywhere from 21 days to 10 weeks to form a new habit, so be consistent and let discipline become habit, habit become lifestyle, and lifestyle become joy!
Ready, Set, Go!
